ALEOS Ethernet Ping Monitor Usage

ALEOS devices using Ethernet WAN as primary link should consider the use of Ping Monitors to determine whether the Ethernet WAN connection is online. The Ethernet WAN interface does not have the same disconnect qualities as the Cellular link, (Note - Cellular disconnects are accompanied with a cellular disconnect message from the carrier) it is recommended that a ping monitor should be configured on the Ethernet WAN.

To Configure the Ethernet Ping Monitor:

  1. Log into ACEmanager

  2. Navigate to WAN/Cellular > Ethernet > Monitor

  3. For "Test Interval (seconds)" - The default is 300 seconds, but the range can be between 1-15300 seconds. Most applications work well with an interval between 900 to 3600 seconds (15 to 60 minutes).

  4. "Monitor Type" - The three options are Disabled, Traffic Monitor and Ping Test. This determines the type of test run on the Ethernet interface.

    1. Disabled (Not recommended when using Ethernet) . No end-to-end diagnostic runs and the service state cannot be verified. It's assumed that this interface provides service if an IP address is assigned.

    2. Traffic Monitor - A ping test is performed if there is no traffic during the configured interval. This would be recommended if you want to keep the data usage to a minimum.

    3. Ping Test - A ping is sent at the end of the test interval regardless of whether or not there has been any traffic during the interval.

  5. "Ping Test IP Address" - IP address to be used for the ping monitor.
Note - It should be noted that the for the ping monitors, the purpose of the monitor is to ensure that there is internet connectivity on the Ethernet WAN and a known public IP should be used (i.e. 8.8.8.8). Internal addresses such as the internal ACM internal IP should not be used. To test if the Ethernet WAN connectivity can ping the address identified, you can test it by navigating to Admin > Advanced > Ping

  6. "Time Between Pings (seconds)" - Time between individual pings.

    1. The default range is 20 seconds, but you can use a range between 1 and 20 seconds.

    2. If the first ping fails, then the gateway will send additional pings at the configured interval.

    3. If all pings fail, the gateway will determine that the Ethernet WAN interface service state as "Not Established".

  7. "Number of Pings" - The number of times the gateway will try to ping the IP address before the gateway considers the Ethernet connection as "Not Established". If the gateway determines the service as "Not Established" it will attempt to switch to another interface according to the Interface Priority under WAN/Cellular > General > Interface Priority
