Scenario

  • My carrier has set up two cellular APNs for my SIM, one for private network access and one for internet access

  • I need to set up my router to access the two different APNs

Step-by-step guide

After logging into the router either locally or through ALMS Configuration, make the following configuration changes

  1. Make sure you have the APN details available; you can configure up to 5 APNs for each cellular radio.

2. Navigate to Hardware Interfaces > Cellular > Configuration

3. For the Cellular radio that is using the SIM that is capable of Multiple APNs, click the APN Mode drop-down and select Multi

4. The APN List box will appear beside the APN Mode drop-down. Click in the entry line near the three dots in the oval, and then click Create just below that line.

5. In the “Create New Virtual APN Connection” dialog, enter the Manual APN string (case-sensitive) and Configuration Name at the very bottom. The Configuration Name will be used to identify this virtual radio within AirLink OS. Specify any other known information such as authentication protocol/username/password if required. Click Create when complete.

6. Repeat steps 4-5 for each APN record you need to create.

7. When all APN records are created, click Save in the orange dialog at the bottom of the screen.

Once complete, the radio will reset and attempt to connect on all configured APNs. They will appear as Virtual Radios in the Status/Monitoring > System > Cellular Radio screen and will be available to use as individual interfaces for firewall and routing rules.

Notes:

In the video, the Configuration Name was not entered which is why the two virtual radios show the same name as the host radio. The screenshot here shows how they are displayed in the dashboard when the configuration name is provided.
